I have few regrets regarding my nature-immersive road trips throughout the Midwestern region, but one is that Hocking Hills State Park was just out of range for my route and itinerary. Visiting Ash Cave to walk amid the abundant plant life that grows in the nooks of this cavern ranks highly on my list of future excursions. Patiently enduring time, the magnificent geological features of this cave open into a natural theater for the smaller worlds of its lush environs. Black Hand sandstone cliffs and nearby gorges are held by mosses, algae, and mycelium networks and their fruiting bodies. Turkey tail mushrooms grow on downed trees and are shown gathered near chanterelles, which grow out of the soil. Both enjoy the company of hardwood trees and sometimes conifers. A graceful duo of Eastern hemlock trees are illuminated in resplendent energy, as if admiring the stream of falling water that splashes the rocks below. Had I visited, I likely would have brought to this illustration a variety of fern species, along with cliff algae and scented liverworts that live on rock walls and in crevices. Nonetheless, essential details are expressed in this drawing, such as the drape of moss beds and the capsules of sporophytes that seem to posses an animated life force, uniquely their own.
